MapEUrHistory – Historical Digital Maps and Local Historical Sources Valorization

The MapEUrHistory project aims to foster the valorisation of local microhistories through the use of European digital historical maps. It seeks to provide teachers and students with innovative tools to collect, catalogue and preserve local historical sources, promoting a deeper connection with the past and fostering critical thinking. In addition, the project focuses on modernising secondary education by integrating digital technologies and multidisciplinary methodologies that connect local history with European historical processes. This approach facilitates the understanding of cultural diversity and fosters a more active and informed European citizenship.

Among the materials developed, an interactive online training platform stands out, including a toolkit available in four languages ​​(English, Italian, Romanian and Spanish). This toolkit integrates training modules in digital history, cataloguing sheets, methodological guides, bibliographies and video tutorials to train teachers in the collection and analysis of microhistories. The platform also allows users to collaborate on digital mapping projects and share their results in a publicly accessible general archive, promoting collaborative education and continuous learning.

The project not only achieved its objectives, but also generated a strong impact on the participating communities. In countries such as Spain, Italy and Romania, the teachers and students involved recovered local stories, such as cultural traditions, monuments and historical events, integrating them into digital mapping. This effort enriched the understanding of local heritage and strengthened international cooperation. Furthermore, the recognition received at the International Festival of Public History in Lecce, Italy, underlined the civic and educational value of the project, highlighting it as an innovative example in the connection between local history and technology.
