Youth R_AI_ght responds to the silent shift that generative AI is producing in the European youth sector, where priorities increasingly reflect algorithmic predictions rather than the lived realities of young people. Over three years, a coalition led by CONNECT International maps how AI is reshaping the sector and forecasts its risks, builds a capacity-building methodology and an AI-resilient e-learning curriculum for youth organisations, and turns the evidence into policy recommendations, a code of conduct and a European coalition for algorithmic accountability.

Youth R_AI_ght responds to the silent shift that generative AI is producing in the European youth sector, where priorities increasingly reflect algorithmic predictions rather than the lived realities of young people. Over three years, a coalition led by CONNECT International maps how AI is reshaping the sector and forecasts its risks, builds a capacity-building methodology and an AI-resilient e-learning curriculum for youth organisations, and turns the evidence into policy recommendations, a code of conduct and a European coalition for algorithmic accountability.

The partners will horizon scanning of the AI-impacted youth sector, with scenario-building forums and future risk mapping. Development of an AI-resilient e-learning curriculum and practical safeguards for youth organisations. Piloting of NGO preparedness tools and consultation processes with youth organisations across Europe. Drafting of a Code of Conduct and a European Charter, with policy dialogue and network building. Communication, dissemination and sustainability actions reaching the wider European youth sector.

By the end of the project the consortium expects to deliver: evidence base and risk scenarios on how generative AI is reshaping the youth sector; AI-resilient e-learning curriculum and capacity-building methodology for youth organisations; Policy recommendations and operational guidelines against algorithmic agenda setting; Code of Conduct and European Charter backed by a coalition of youth organisations.

Objectives

  • Map the AI-impacted youth sector ecosystem and forecast future systemic risks, building a comprehensive evidence base.
  • Design and implement a capacity-building methodology that equips youth organisations to use AI responsibly while keeping human oversight.
  • Translate the research into policy recommendations and operational guidelines that protect the sector from algorithm-driven agenda setting.
  • Mobilise a European coalition advocating for algorithmic accountability and systemic safeguards, so that youth participation and democratic values stay central.

What BACKSLASH does in this project

BACKSLASH leads or co-leads tasks across all five work packages, with its main contribution in capacity building: it brings the AI Competence Framework developed in AI4Youth, which it coordinated, as the pedagogical baseline for the training and gap analysis, and the e-learning architecture of its Turning Digital project to host the curriculum modules. It also co-leads tasks on research, policy consultation and dissemination.
